Rayearth's Description
Zagato, the villain of the series, or is he? Is he your typical good looking bad guy who dresses in black who watches our heroines from afar and sends his minions in an attempt to finish the story in every episode in magic girl shows? Nope. Zagato is not your typical villain, he's not really a villain at all actually.
He was labelled as the villain because Clef explained to the Knights (and the audience) he captured Princess Emeraude, stopping her from praying for Cefiro and hence driving chaos to the land. But it was really Princess Emeraude sealing herself away (this fact was kept secret until the Knights confront the princess in the last episode of season 1). Zagato loves the princess, he loves her so much that he cannot bear to see her suffer from being the pillar, always spending her time praying for the people of Cefiro instead of finding happiness for herself. Zagato is one of the most determined souls in Cefiro, he does not feel guilt in being accused for imprisoning the princess and although he knows of the legend that states he will be destroyed by the Magic Knights, he still wishes for Emeraude to be free from the burdens of being Pillar. Zagato is more like a tragic hero.
