Princess Emeraude (now referred to as just Emeraude) is your typical princess in need of a hero to save the day. But her situation and her wish isn't exactly the typical defeat the big bad guy and live happily ever after. In fact, it is nearly the complete opposite. She summoned the Magic Knights to kill her, for she has done something anybody who becomes Pillar in Cefiro was forbidden to do.
She fell in love with Zagato. She loves him so much that she is willing to give up being Pillar, throwing everything away just to be with him. However, her conscious doesn't allow her to, but she loves him too much to go back. Therefore, following the legend, she summoned the Magic Knights, whom are destined to kill her. Knowing it'll be a hard fight, she gives Mokona to Clef and instructs him to help the Knights when they arrive, and apologize to them - since it's her fault they were dragged into this.
